Defend the Dale Farm Traveller Community!

The British high court ruling against the Dale Farm Traveller community in Essex is a shameful indictment of the inherently discriminatory nature of the capitalist judicial system. The contributors to The Red Badger condemn this unjust ruling against the Dale Farm Travellers. We also condemn the ongoing discrimination by the British and southern Irish capitalist states against Travellers.

Revolutionary socialists in Ireland and Britain must defend the rights of Travellers including meaningful recognition by the state of their unique cultural identity and the provision of services in accordance with the Traveller community’s cultural practices.

What’s wrong with Workers’ Power?

Workers’ Power (WP), British section of the League for the Fifth International (L5I), has recently chosen to adopt an odd position for an ostensibly revolutionary organisation: it has decided to side with the forces of imperialism in the conflict in Libya.

Facts Against Fictions – The ISL Responds to CWI Charges that it Lied about their Israeli Group

Below is a response by the Internationalist Socialist League to accusations made regarding their statement on the Israeli protest movement which we posted on The Red Badger on August 14th.

Facts Against Fictions –

The ISL Responds to CWI Charges that it Lied about their Israeli Group

In our recent statement on the Israeli housing price protest movement, [1] the ISL made some serious criticisms of the role played by the Maavak Sozialisti group (MS), the Israeli section of the Committee for a Workers International (CWI). “Maavak,” we alleged, “has capitulated to the movement’s dominant “social justice for Israelis” chauvinism.” In response, supporters of the CWI rallied to their comrades’ defense, accusing us of spreading “utterly despicable” “out and out lies” [2] about their comrades.

Israelis Demand Social Justice – But What of the Palestinians?

Below is a statement by the Internationalist Socialist League (ISL) who are a small Trotskyist propaganda group from Israel/Occupied Palestine. The Red Badger is not formally associated with the comrades of the ISL but we are in broad agreement with their central programmatic positions including that on the national question in Palestine. We welcome any comments readers may have on this statement and surrounding issues.

Israelis Demand Social Justice – But What of the Palestinians?

A tent city in Tel Aviv set up to draw attention to the high cost of housing in Israel has sparked a mass protest movement across the country. Last weekend over three hundred thousand Israelis marched in protest. “The people,” they chanted, “want social justice!”

Stagnant wages, rising prices and cutbacks in social welfare have indeed been making life unbearable for a growing number of Israelis. A struggle against this is long overdue. However, the current protest movement has limited itself to demanding “social justice” only for Israelis. Meanwhile, right under the protesters’ noses in Israel, not to mention in Gaza, the West Bank and beyond, Palestinians suffer the most terrible deprivation and oppression.

March for Marriage 2011 leaflet

Fight for Gay Marriage!

Marriage is a democratic and legal right that should be available to all couples regardless of their sexual orientation. The right to marry is at present denied to gay couples in the south of Ireland. Gay relationships are deemed by the state to be less ‘legitimate’ than those of ‘straight’ couples. The current ‘civil partnership’ status offered to gay couples is not enough. Without the right to marry and access to all associated legal benefits gay people will effectively remain second-class citizens in this state.

“Family Values” & Gay Oppression

We defend the right of all people to choose to marry, and we recognise that many people see no alternative to the legal and economic assurances accessible through marriage. But we must also expose the relationship between the institution of marriage and the oppression of gay people and women. Under capitalism marriage has taken on a specific role as part of the “traditional” family unit. The ideology of “family values” that sprang up in defence of this is necessarily anti-gay as the ridiculous claim is made that marriage between two people is solely for the purpose of reproduction. Access to free and safe abortion on demand is denied to women in Ireland on the same basis. The oppression of gay people and women goes hand in hand. The struggle for equality must do the same.

The Fight for Gay Liberation

Revolutionary socialists fight for every single demand and gain made by gay people in their struggle for liberation. However, we must also state clearly that the only way to achieve gay liberation is through the socialist transformation of society. The capitalist state and politicians cannot be trusted when it comes to fighting for gay rights. The capitalist system inevitably looks to undercut any gains made by the oppressed in order to defend the profits of the few.

The only way to defeat capitalist attacks on all of our rights and living standards is through united working class action. We also need to create a new revolutionary socialist party in order to provide the leadership the struggles of the oppressed so desperately need.

The struggles of the working class and oppressed sections of humanity to date have shown that only when equipped with a revolutionary socialist leadership can the struggle for liberation be advanced. The ultimate goal must be the overthrow of the rotten capitalist system in order to put an end to exploitation and discrimination once and for all.

Gay Marriage Now!

 Defend Gay Rights!

 Build the Revolutionary Socialist Party!
